A life coach is someone who helps and empowers others to make, meet and exceed personal and professional goals in all areas of their life. Sometimes a client will be struggling in one particular area. Life coaching aims to help the client improve that area and learn how all areas of their life intertwine and how each area affects another. As a result the client is able to reach their full potential with understanding and clarity.
How does a life coach do this?
They harness specialist techniques based on core psychological principals and natural intuition. Life coaches provide clients with the tools to confidently face difficult situations, push past emotional barriers and eventually view life with fresh, hopeful and enlightened eyes. Life coaching can help people from all professional and personal backgrounds to make the most of their lives. They listen to the problems you feel are affecting you. Then, they will see what is holding you back. Spoiler alert: usually we're holding ourselves back! Life coaches teach you how to get out of your own way. They also teach you to identify when you might be self sabotaging, what hidden fears you have, and how these impact upon your life. If everybody had a life coach we'd all be happier and more successful!
Are they just an "Agony Aunt"?
Just like a counsellor, a life coach will never try to be an 'agony aunt'. He or she will never attempt to dish out advice. Giving advice is just a way of imposing a personal view of the world onto another person (who may or may not share the same view). It is not a life coach's job to become personally involved in a client's life. Life coaching is about objectivity, structure and empowerment. Not instruction / convincing / preaching to the client. This is why many a psychotherapist and counsellor also offer life coaching or sometimes even re-train to become a life coach and specialise in that.
Will my Life Coach tell me what to do, like a personal trainer?
A life coach is not an "instructor" - more of a guide. At the end of the day life coaches believe the client has the power inside of them already to make their life the best it can be - the life coach helps the client harness that power!
